Akham Lakshmi Devi, born on May 1, 1952, is a distinguished Indian classical Manipuri dancer. Her parents were Pukhrambam Kunjakishore Singh and Pukhrambam Ekasini Devi. Her grandmother, Ibachi Devi, was also a keen lover of dance and participated in the role of Radha. Devi began her formal training in Manipuri dance at the age of six at the erstwhile Manipur Dance College, which is now known as the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy. She earned her Nrityacharya degree in 1968. Throughout her career, Akham Lakshmi Devi received intensive training from several eminent gurus, including the late Padma Shri Guru Amubi Singh, the late Padma Shri Guru H Tomba Singh, Guru Amuyaima, and Guru Th Babu Singh, who collectively shaped her into a leading artiste in Manipuri Dance. She has been particularly associated with Guru Th Babu for her solo performances and for her contributions to the experimentation and innovation of Manipuri classical dance. As a pioneer in classical solo and duet Manipuri dance, Akham Lakshmi Devi has captivated audiences globally. She has performed at numerous major dance festivals both within India, such as Khajuraho and Konark festivals, and internationally in countries like Russia, London, France, and South Africa. She also served as a senior artiste in productions at the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy. Her solo performances, especially in the Lasya aspect of Manipuri dance, have garnered widespread acclaim. Devi was uniquely selected nine times for the Classical Solo Dance Festival organized by the Manipur State Kala Akademi between 1985 and 1997. Beyond live performances, she has also acted as a dance artiste in award-winning documentary films like 'Meetei Poong' and played the role of 'Sangai' in the film 'Sangai', produced by the Sangeet Natak Akademi. Her work has been crucial in preserving and promoting the traditional techniques and spirit of Manipuri dance.
