Madhur Gupta is recognized as one of the leading Odissi dance exponents and masters of his generation, notably as one of the few male artists to achieve such distinction in a field predominantly dominated by women. His journey into classical dance began at an early age with initial training in Kathak under the legendary Padma Vibhushan Pt. Birju Maharaj. However, he was profoundly drawn to Odissi, where he received fundamental training from Padma Shri Madhavi Mudgal at Gandharva Mahavidyalaya and further honed his skills at the Rudrakshya Foundation in Orissa. Currently, he continues his advanced training under the mentorship of renowned danseuse Guru Sharon Lowen in New Delhi, maintaining the soft, lyrical quality of Padma Vibhushan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra's style. Gupta has also had the opportunity to interact and learn from other masters such as Bichitrananda Swain and Kumkum Lal. An acclaimed performer of international standing, Madhur Gupta has represented India on prestigious stages across numerous countries, including the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Mexico, Russia, Singapore, and China, both as a soloist and alongside his gurus. Within India, he has graced leading cultural platforms and festivals such as the Raza Foundation, SPIC MACAY, Sarmaya, Virasat, and various government-convened festivals in Delhi. He is a Graded Artist of India's national television Doordarshan and has shared the stage with Padmashri Shovana Narayan. Beyond performing, Gupta is a celebrated author and novelist, contributing regular columns on Indian classical dance and music to national and international publications like The Hindu, The Times of India, The Hindustan Times, and The Indian Express. He is also the author of the bestselling book "Courting Hindustan." Madhur Gupta is the founder of Sangeet Vidya Niketan in New Delhi, an institution dedicated to the education and preservation of Indian classical dance and music, where he actively teaches Odissi. He also serves as the Artistic Director of the Madhur Gupta Dance Company.
