🪔 About
Madhurantakam Jagadambal Ammal was a historical figure in Indian classical dance, specifically Bharatanatyam. She was identified as one of the many devadasis who received training under Samu Nattuvanar. Her period of activity is noted to predate the era of the Tanjore Quartet, who were instrumental in codifying the modern Bharatanatyam repertoire in the early 19th century. As a devadasi, she belonged to a tradition of women dedicated to temple service in South India, who performed dance as a form of worship and storytelling. While the devadasi system was central to the origins of Bharatanatyam, detailed individual biographies of many practitioners from this earlier period are scarce in available historical records.
