Mahankali Satyanarayana (1940-1977) was a distinguished Indian classical dancer and a revered guru of Kuchipudi, born in 1940. He commenced his artistic journey with early dance training under the guidance of his father, Sriramulu. To further hone his craft, he refined his dance skills under the tutelage of the eminent Chinta Venkataramayya and concurrently pursued musical studies under the mentorship of Challapilla Sitaramayya. Satyanarayana earned widespread acclaim for his exceptional talent, particularly in his masterful portrayal of Tamasik characters, a specialization in which he was considered a peer to the renowned Hari Venkatachalapati. His stage performances were celebrated for their natural ease and spontaneity, captivating audiences with his compelling interpretations. He garnered unparalleled recognition for his vivid portrayals of characters such as Virabahu and Viswamitra. Furthermore, his depictions of Banasura and Hiranyakasipa were particularly noteworthy, as he brought remarkable depth and conviction to these figures often depicted as torn between conflicting emotions. His commanding stage presence and profound histrionic talents were also powerfully demonstrated through his portrayal of Yamadharmaraja. Throughout his career, Satyanarayana actively collaborated with esteemed colleagues, including Vedantam Raghavayya, Bhagavatula Suryanarayana, Darbha Venkateswarulu, and Vedantam Ramayya, performing under the collective banner of Mahankali melamu. His enduring legacy in Kuchipudi is further highlighted by his son, Natyacharya Mahankali Suryanarayana Sarma, who proudly acknowledges his father as his guru and bestows upon him the honorific title "Yakshagana Chakravarthi" (Emperor of Yakshagana), underscoring his profound influence and expertise in the traditional dance-drama form. Mahankali Satyanarayana passed away in 1977.
