Malavika Singh is an emerging Indian classical dancer specializing in Odissi, currently a rising sophomore at Columbia University, where she is pursuing studies in dance and cognitive science. Her journey in dance began at the age of four, sparked by an enchantment with Ballet West’s Nutcracker, leading her to enroll in ballet and contemporary classes. At the age of twelve, Malavika discovered her passion for Odissi after participating in a summer workshop at Nrityagram, a renowned dance village in India. This experience deeply resonated with her, prompting her to continue her training by traveling to Nrityagram every summer and winter. Her dedication to the art form intensified, and since 2019, she has been passionately training under the tutelage of the esteemed guru Bijayini Satpathy. Prior to this, she had joined a school in India in 2016 where Bijayini Satpathy was a teacher, principal dancer, and director for training. In June 2020, Malavika transitioned to online training with Guru Satpathy. Malavika Singh has already garnered significant recognition for her talent and commitment. In 2022, she was honored as a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts for Dance. She has performed a solo piece, choreographed and adapted by Bijayini Satpathy, which is noted for embodying the concept of sculptures transforming into movement vocabulary. Beyond her personal training and performances, Malavika also contributes to the dance community as the Website & Social Media Manager for Chitrakaavya Dance.
