Mamatha Karanth is an accomplished Bharatanatyam performer, choreographer, and teacher based in Bangalore, India. She holds a master's degree in Bharatanatyam and is a graded Doordarshan artiste. Karanth has performed in over 750 shows both in India and internationally, and has conducted 25 arangetrams, setting high standards for her students. She is also a skilled nattuvanar. Mamatha Karanth is the founder and head of Natyalahari, a Bharatanatyam institution in Whitefield, Bangalore, which has over 150 dedicated students. She received her training from veteran mentors such as Vidwan Chandrasekhara Navada and Karnataka Kalashree Guru B. Banumathi. Karanth is known for her thematic dance presentations that often convey social messages. Her production "Karnamaham" focused on environmental awareness, urging people to be the change rather than waiting for external intervention. This work earned her recognition from the Enviro Creators Foundation, Gujarat, in 2019. She believes that the intrinsic purpose of art is to elevate consciousness and convey messages to society, and she finds it a challenge to weave modern themes into traditional Bharatanatyam while maintaining its sanctity. Her performances are often described as deeply spiritual; during rehearsals for her "Rama Charitham" show in 2017, she was noted to slip into a state of trance, viewing dance as a practice that keeps her alive and a divine form of yoga. Her dedication extends to her teaching, where she mentors students for over a decade, guiding them through their arangetrams and fostering their growth in the art form.
