Mathoor Govindan Kutty (born Narayana Govinda Kunju Panicker on October 5, 1940, in Nedumudi village, Alappuzha district, Kerala) was an eminent Indian Kathakali artist renowned for his portrayal of female characters, known as Stri Vesham. His illustrious career spanned over six decades, during which he became one of the foremost exponents of the art form. Govindan Kutty began his Kathakali training at the age of 14 under Nedumudy Kuttappa Panicker. He further honed his skills under the tutelage of Kurissi Kunjan Panicker and Ambalappuzha Shekhar at the Mathoor Kalari. His specialization in Stri Vesham was significantly shaped by his training under the legendary Kudamaloor Karunakaran Nair at the Thekkan Chitta Gurukulam. He credited Nair's portrayal of Damayanti as a major inspiration for his focus on female roles. Throughout his career, Mathoor Govindan Kutty performed extensively across India and internationally, including in European countries. He was celebrated for his nuanced performances in roles such as Damayanti in Nalacharitram, Kunti in Karnasapatham, and Panchali in Duryodhana Vadham. Beyond his performances, he was a respected teacher, training numerous artists at the Kudamaloor Kalakendra. He was also a member of the governing body of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi and held a senior fellowship from the Union Government. Mathoor Govindan Kutty passed away on February 4, 2021, in Kottayam, Kerala, at the age of 80.
