Mayadhar Rout (1930-2025) was a legendary Indian classical Odissi dancer, choreographer, and guru, widely recognized for his pivotal role in the revival and codification of Odissi as a classical dance form. Born on July 6, 1930, in Kantapenhara village near Cuttack, Odisha, he began his dance journey at age seven as a gotipua under Guru Kali Charan Patnaik, performing professionally by 1942–1943. He further trained under Guru Pankaj Charan Das and Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. In 1955, he received a scholarship to study Bharatanatyam and Kathakali at Rukmini Devi Arundale's Kalakshetra in Chennai, where he deepened his understanding of ancient texts like the Natyashastra and Abhinaya Darpana. [1, 3, 5, 11, 12, 15] Rout's contributions were instrumental in elevating Odissi from a regional folk-temple art to a structured classical idiom. He was a key founder member of the Jayantika association in 1959, which worked to standardize mudras, poses, and abhinaya based on shastric principles. He introduced significant elements such as Mudra Vinyoga (1955) and Sanchari Bhava, enriching the form's expressive vocabulary and helping it achieve official classical status from the Sangeet Natak Akademi around 1964. He was also the first to choreograph Gita Govinda ashtapadis with Shringara Rasa for the stage, notably premiering them at Delhi's Kamani Auditorium in 1971. In 1969, he relocated to Delhi and from 1970 to 1995, he served as head of the Odissi department at Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, mentoring generations of dancers. He also founded the Jayantika (Mayadhar Raut School of Odissi Dance), which has teaching centers globally. Rout passed away in Delhi on February 22, 2025, at the age of 94, leaving an enduring legacy as one of the "fathers of Odissi."
