Medha Yodh (July 31, 1927 – July 11, 2007) was a renowned Indian and Indian American Bharatanatyam dancer and a significant figure in classical Indian dance education. Born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, she began dancing before the age of five. Her early training included Manipuri under Nabhakumar Singh and Bharatanatyam under Kumar Jaykar in Mumbai. Despite her passion for dance, Yodh pursued a strong academic path, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Bombay and a Master's in Chemistry from Stanford University in California. Her life in dance took a pivotal turn in 1962 when she met and became a lifelong disciple of Tanjore Balasaraswati, one of the most revered Indian dancers of her generation, in Connecticut. Yodh dedicated herself to the teaching and performing of Bharatanatyam, emphasizing Balasaraswati's values and dance styles. Yodh joined the UCLA faculty in 1976, where she taught classical Indian dance until her retirement in 1994. During her tenure, she profoundly influenced hundreds of students, opening the curriculum to various classical dance forms and mentoring them beyond their university years. She was known for her progressive approach, encouraging the reinterpretation of tradition and the depiction of the immigrant experience in dance. In 1987, she created the acclaimed documentary film "Garba-Ras: A Glimpse Into Gujarati Culture," which explored the communal dances of Gujarat as practiced by the immigrant Gujarati community in Los Angeles. After retiring from UCLA, Yodh continued to advise arts organizations, teach privately until 2002, and perform throughout California. She passed away in San Diego, California, at the age of 79.
