Soo Mei Fei is a Singaporean artist and dancer of Chinese ethnicity, recognized for her dedication to Bharatanatyam, an Indian classical dance form. Her journey into Bharatanatyam began unexpectedly at the age of 17 when she joined an Indian Dance co-curricular activity at National Junior College, initially mistaking it for Bollywood dance. Despite the initial surprise, she became deeply fascinated by Bharatanatyam's intricate footwork, expressive gestures, and emotive storytelling, leading her to delve into its history and significance. Mei Fei pursued her Bharatanatyam training at Apsaras Arts Academy, initially under the guidance of the late Smt. Neila Sathyalingam, and subsequently under Sri. Mohanapriyan Thavarajah, under whom she presented her Arangetram in 2021. This solo debut performance, which lasted two to three hours, marked a significant milestone in her dance journey and was described by veteran dancer V. Balakrishnan as the performance of a professional dancer. She also briefly trained in Odissi under Smt. Soumee De and currently undergoes training in Nattuvangam under Dr. G.V. Guru Bharadwaaj. Mei Fei is also a Fine Arts graduate from LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore. As a performer, Mei Fei has been part of ensemble works with Apsaras Arts Dance Company and Kasi, under Kalpavriksha Fine Arts. She is also a teacher, instructing at children's enrichment centres and dance academies in Singapore, where she aims to foster an appreciation for Bharatanatyam, especially among non-Indians. Her unique background and commitment to Bharatanatyam have garnered significant media attention, with many praising her body language and the purity of her dance. Mei Fei believes that art transcends boundaries and serves as a means of personal growth, self-expression, and cultural discovery, instilling qualities like discipline, resilience, and empathy in her students.
