Melanie Piorecky is a Canadian practitioner and teacher of Indian classical dance, primarily Bharatanatyam. Her journey into Indian classical dance began after attending a Bharatanatyam workshop with former Vernon resident Devaki Thomas. She pursued her training with teachers in Calgary, Chennai, India, and Vancouver. Piorecky completed her arangetram, an intense two-hour performance with live music, in Calgary in 2007. Following her arangetram, she began teaching and choreographing Bharatanatyam. She founded Ananda Dance in Vernon, British Columbia, where she continues to share her passion for the art form. Piorecky has also been an organizer of events aimed at promoting Indian classical dance and music, such as "Ta Ki Ta" in Vernon, which featured classical Indian dance alongside fusion styles like Bollywood and Bhangra, and aimed to educate audiences on the classical forms.
