🪔 About
Minati Mishra, born Minati Das in Cuttack, Odisha, India, in 1929, was a renowned Indian classical dancer and actress celebrated for her profound expertise in Odissi. Her early artistic journey began with learning theme-based dance under Ajit Ghosh and Banabihari Maity. She was introduced to Odissi by Kabichandra Kalicharan Patnayak and further honed her skills under the legendary Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, beginning in 1950. Mishra also pursued Bharatanatyam, receiving a scholarship from the Government of Odisha to train at Kalakshetra under Rukmini Devi Arundale, Kutty Sarada, and Peria Sarada in 1954, followed by studies with Pandanallur Chokkalingam Pillai and Meenakshisundaram Pillai in 1955. She made her Bharatanatyam arangetram debut in 1956 and was awarded the Natyakalabhushanam in 1958. Beyond dance, she was an "A" Grade artist at All India Radio and earned the Sangeet Prabhakar title for Hindustani vocal music. Mishra's career saw extensive performances across India and Europe, including invitations to Switzerland in 1959 and the Berlin Film Festival in 1963. She earned a doctoral degree in Indology from the Philipp University of Marburg, Germany, in 1962, for her research on the Natyashastra. From 1964 to 1989, she served as the Principal of the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya in Bhubaneswar, where she played a pivotal role in regularizing the curriculum, formalizing Odissi dance and music training, and establishing examination guidelines, significantly contributing to the revival and institutionalization of Odissi. She also collaborated with other foundational figures like Pankaj Charan Das and Deba Prasad Das during this period. In 2011, she was reported to be the oldest-living Odissi performer. Mishra also had an acting career, appearing in five Odia films, including "Suryamukhi" and "Arundhati," many of which received National Film Awards. After the passing of her husband, Nityananda Mishra, in 1980, she retired from dance performances, formally retiring in 1990, and settled in Switzerland, dedicating her time to dance festivals, lecture tours, and workshops. She passed away in Zurich, Switzerland, on January 6, 2020, at the age of 91.
