🪔 About
Mrinalini Sarabhai (1918-2016) was an iconic Indian classical dancer, choreographer, and instructor, widely recognized for her profound contributions to Bharatanatyam and Kathakali. Born Mrinalini Swaminadhan on May 11, 1918, in Madras (now Chennai), Kerala, she belonged to a family deeply involved in India's independence movement. Her early training included the Dalcroze technique in Switzerland and studies at Visva-Bharati University in Shantiniketan under Rabindranath Tagore. She also briefly attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in the United States. Upon her return to India, she received rigorous classical dance training in Bharatanatyam from Meenakshisundaram Pillai and Kathakali from Guru Kunju Kurup (also known as Thakazhi Kunchu Kurup), becoming one of the first women to perform the traditionally male-dominated Kathakali. She further expanded her repertoire by learning Mohiniyattam from Kalyanikutty Amma, Kuchipudi, and Manipuri. In 1942, she married physicist Vikram Sarabhai. In 1949, they co-founded the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. As its founding director, Mrinalini Sarabhai developed Darpana into a premier institution for training in dance, drama, music, and puppetry, impacting thousands of students over more than six decades. Her innovative choreography, comprising over 300 productions, often integrated classical forms with contemporary social themes, addressing issues like dowry deaths, caste violence, and environmental degradation. She performed extensively internationally, promoting Indian arts globally. Beyond dance, she authored novels, poetry, plays, and her autobiography, "Mrinalini Sarabhai: The Voice of the Heart." She passed away on January 21, 2016, in Ahmedabad, leaving an enduring legacy in Indian performing arts. Her daughter, Mallika Sarabhai, continues her work as a renowned dancer and activist. Awards & Honours: Padma Shri (1965), Padma Bhushan (1992), Gold medal from the Mexican government for choreography for the Ballet Folklórico de México (1968), Vishwa Gurjari Award (1984), Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Fellowship (1988), Nominated to the executive committee of the International Dance Council, Paris (1990), Pandit Omkarnath Thakur Award (1991), Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship (1994), Degree of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa (LittD) by the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK (1997), First Indian to receive the medal and Diploma of the French association Archives Internationales de la Danse, Padma Vibhushan (2013), Nishagandhi Puraskaram (2013).
