Bragha Bessell is a highly acclaimed Bharatanatyam dancer and a distinguished specialist in abhinaya (expressive storytelling). Her dance journey began at a young age, leading to her arangetram on December 6, 1967. She received extensive training from an illustrious lineage of gurus, including Sri Mangudi Durairaj Iyer, Sri P.S. Kunchithapadam Pillai, Padma Shri Adyar K. Lakshman, and Padma Bhushan Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan. This rigorous training has shaped her into one of her generation's finest exponents of Bharatanatyam, celebrated for both her command of nritta (pure dance) and her profound depth in abhinaya. After a period of 12 years living outside India following her marriage, Bessell was invited by then-Kalakshetra director Leela Samson to teach abhinaya, marking a significant return to her dance career. Since then, she has become a highly sought-after teacher and performer, conducting numerous recitals, workshops, and lecture-demonstrations across Asia, America, and Europe. Her original choreography in Bharatanatyam and abhinaya has garnered wide appreciation from students, teachers, and professional dancers alike. Bessell is known for her ability to convey intricate narratives and spiritual themes through nuanced expressions, making her performances deeply impactful. She has been an empaneled artist of Doordarshan.
