Dr. Subashini Pathmanathan is a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, specializing in Bharathanatyam. She received her education at the Government College for Women in Chandigarh and graduated from Punjab University, where she also completed her postgraduate studies. Furthering her academic pursuits, she earned a Doctorate in Bharathanatyam from the University of Colombo, with her dissertation focusing on the “impact of Bharathanatyam on the ancient Sri Lankan Hindu Temple sculptures and architectural decorative sculptures from the Polonnaruwa era.” Her classical Bharathanatyam training was under the late Padmashree Vazhuvoor Ramiahpillai, a renowned guru of the Vazhuvoor style, as a Gurukula student. In recognition of her dedication and talent, Vazhuvoor Ramiahpillai conferred upon her the esteemed title "Nattyakalasihamani." Dr. Pathmanathan is a prolific author and researcher, having penned numerous widely acclaimed books on Bharathanatyam, Hinduism, and Hindu culture. Her publications, which began in 1991, include titles such as "Bharathanatyam A Basic Study," "Sri Lankan Classical Dances," and "Bharathanatyam A Divine Dance." She has also authored hundreds of articles since 1983 and regularly contributes to both local and international journals. As a dedicated educator, Dr. Subashini Pathmanathan has been teaching Bharathanatyam at the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC), High Commission of India, Colombo, since its inception. She is also a seasoned performer, having presented numerous classical recitals. Her contributions to the arts have been recognized with significant accolades, including the Esmond Wickramasinghe award in 1991 and the Kalimamani award from the Sri Lankan government in 2017. She frequently conducts lecture-demonstrations, such as "Mathuram" in 2023, and online recitals through the SVCC platform.
