Kalakendram Muraleedharan Namboothiri was a renowned Indian classical dancer specializing in Kathakali, particularly acclaimed for his portrayal of female characters. Born on January 11, 1969, in Elavanat Illam, Kottayam District, he was the son of E.K. Narayanan Namboodiri and Kamaladevi Antharjanam. He undertook nine years of intensive Kathakali training from 1982 to 1991 at Kalakshethram, Kudamaloor. During this period, he had the privilege of learning from eminent gurus such as Kudamaloor Karunakaran Nair, Mathur Govindan Kutty, Kalamandalam Ramakrishnan, and Kalamandalam Murali. Muraleedharan Namboothiri developed expertise in "Minukku" characters and gained significant recognition for his captivating female roles. He performed extensively across India, gracing stages in cities like Gujarat, Bombay, Bangalore, and Delhi. He was considered a disciple and successor of his gurus Kudamaloor Karunakaran Nair and Mathur Govindan Kutty. His performances of female roles alongside other prominent Kathakali artists like Mathur Govindan Kutty, Kalamandalam Ramankutty, Kalamandalam Gopi, and Kottakkal Sivaraman were particularly noted. Muraleedharan Namboothiri was based in Kottayam, India, and passed away on September 17, 2022, at the age of 53.
