Mylapore Gowri Ammal, also known as Mylapore Gowri Amma (1892–1971), was a legendary Bharatanatyam dancer and an unparalleled teacher of abhinaya from Mylapore, India. Born in 1892 into a Devadasi family in Mylapore, Tamil Nadu, she inherited a rich artistic lineage; her mother, Doraikannu Ammal, was also a renowned dancer. Gowri Ammal received her early dance training from her mother and the esteemed guru Nelluru Munuswamy Nattuvanar (also referred to as Nallur Muniswami Pillay). She began her career as a temple dancer at the Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore, often referred to as the last devadasi to serve there. Her performances were noted for her exquisite abhinaya (expressive acting), bhava (facial expressions), and musical talent, often singing while performing. In 1932, she performed at the Madras Music Academy, an event crucial to the recognition of Bharatanatyam as a classical art form. Her last public performance was at the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Indian National Congress in 1935. The passing of the Madras Devadasis (Prevention of Dedication) Act in 1947, which banned the devadasi system, led to her losing her temple patronage and home. Subsequently, she dedicated her life to teaching, becoming a pivotal figure in the revival and propagation of Bharatanatyam. She taught at Kalakshetra and was instrumental in shaping the careers of many eminent dancers. Mylapore Gowri Ammal passed away on January 22, 1971.
