Chandramana Govindan Namboothiri, a distinguished Kathakali artist from Kerala, India, was born on February 15, 1935, in Chandramana Illam, Asamannoor, to C.S. Govindan Namboodiri and Devaki Antharjanam. His journey into the world of Kathakali began in 1947, at the age of 12, when he commenced his formal training under the tutelage of Kavunkal Chathunni Panikkar. After three years of foundational studies in Kerala, Namboothiri further honed his skills at the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts in Ahmedabad, where he continued his advanced studies alongside his primary mentor. During his time at Darpana, he also benefited from the guidance of other eminent Kathakali luminaries such as Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair and Mankulam Vishnu Namboothiri. Namboothiri quickly established himself as a versatile performer, specializing in the portrayal of "Pacha" (green-faced noble heroes), "Kathi" (anti-heroic warriors), and "Minukku" (subtle sage-like or female characters). His career spanned several decades, marked by numerous performances in temples, Kathakali clubs, and academies across Kerala. He was particularly noted for his masterful depiction of roles like Karnan in "Karnasapadham," as well as characters such as Naaradan and Sudevan. Beyond his performances, Chandramana Govindan Namboothiri dedicated himself to the preservation and propagation of Kathakali, blending rigorous traditional training with expressive storytelling deeply rooted in Hindu epics. His significant contributions to the art form were recognized with several prestigious accolades. In 1994, he received the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award for his excellence in Kathakali performance. The Department of Culture, Government of India, honored him with a Senior Fellowship in 1997–1998 for his research on 'Ilakiyattam'. In 1999, he was also presented with the Thulasivanam Award for classical arts, underscoring his enduring impact on Kathakali and inspiring future generations of artists. His son, Chandramana Narayanan Namboothiri, also became a Kathakali artist, having learned under his father's guidance.
