🪔 About
L. Narendra Kumar is a distinguished Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, and teacher, widely recognized for his contributions to the classical Indian dance form. His journey in dance began at a young age, with an innate interest in rhythm and movement. He received his foundational training as an early student of the renowned Dhananjayans at Bharata Kalanjali. Later, he joined Kalakshetra, where he underwent a rigorous process of "unlearning to re-learn," further refining his artistry. His influences also include the philosophical guidance of Sharada Hoffman. Beyond Bharatanatyam, Kumar has expanded his artistic repertoire by studying various martial arts such as Kalaripayattu, Silambam, and Tai-Chi, which he often integrates into his choreographic works. With over 25 years of experience, Narendra Kumar has established himself as a versatile performer and an innovative choreographer. He is an "A grade artist" at Doordarshan Kendra and has traveled extensively across the globe, conducting performances and workshops. In 1995, he founded the Avigna Dance Ensemble. He later established "Anusham Dance Group," also known as Anusham Dance School, alongside his wife, Anusha Narendra Kumar, who is also a disciple of the Dhananjayans. Anusham, which began in 2000, currently operates four branches in Chennai, serving as a significant institution for Bharatanatyam training. As a dedicated guru, he has developed innovative methods for teaching the technicalities of classical dance and actively mentors young male dancers, creating opportunities for them in the field. Kumar's choreographic prowess is evident in his diverse projects, including a notable collaboration with Pudukkottai district collector Kavitha Ramu, where he choreographed a unique performance showcasing folk dance and martial arts inspired by chess for the Chess Olympiad. His artistic excellence has been recognized with several prestigious accolades, including the "Best Dancer of the year" award from the Music Academy in 2023, the "Nrithya Choodamani" title from Sri Krishna Gana Sabha in 2025, and the "NARTHAKA NIPUNA" award from ABHAI in 2025. He was also chosen by legendary dancer Yamini Krishnamurthy as her dance partner and nattuvangam artist, highlighting his esteemed position in the Bharatanatyam world. Awards & Honours: Best Dancer of the year (Music Academy) (2023), Nrithya Choodamani (Sri Krishna Gana Sabha) (2025), NARTHAKA NIPUNA (ABHAI) (2025).
