Nirupama Nityanandan is an Indian classical dancer, actress, and director, primarily known for her extensive career in French theatre, rooted in a strong foundation of Bharatanatyam. Born in South India, she began her training in Bharatanatyam at the age of six and later became an interpreter and professor of the dance form in Madras (now Chennai), India, between 1977 and 1987. She is also noted as a product of Kalakshetra, a renowned institution for the preservation of Indian art forms. In 1987, Nityanandan transitioned to a prominent career in theatre, joining the prestigious Théâtre du Soleil troupe in France, where she remained until 1997 and rejoined in 2013. During her time with the company, she played significant roles such as Iphigénie, Cassandre, Electre, Elmire, and Lady Macbeth. Her theatrical work has extended to collaborations with various directors in France, the United States, and India. Beyond performing, Nityanandan is also a director, having staged "jeune public" (young audience) shows since 2006, and a pedagogue, regularly conducting workshops in theatre, dance, and communication across France and internationally. She has also appeared in several films and television series.
