Nivrithi Mahesh

🪔 About

Nivrritii Mahesh, affectionately known as Nivi, is an emerging Bharatanatyam dancer recognized for her inspiring journey in classical Indian dance as a bilateral cochlear implant recipient. Born profoundly deaf in India, her family moved to the United States where she received cochlear implant surgery at the age of 4 1/2. She began her Bharatanatyam training at seven years old under the guidance of her mother and guru, Aishwarya Chakravarthy, who is also a Bharatanatyam teacher. Nivrritii's dedication to Bharatanatyam, an art form deeply rooted in rhythm and subtle auditory cues, required immense perseverance. She relied on years of practice, muscle memory, visual cues, and innovative stage adaptations to synchronize with live musicians. In preparation for her debut, she undertook intensive training in India with teacher Vijna Vasudevan. On June 14, 2025, at the age of 17, Nivrritii performed her Bharatanatyam Arangetram in Connecticut, USA, with a live orchestra. This achievement is considered historic, as she is believed to be among the first in the world with cochlear implants to accomplish such a feat. Her performance was lauded for its clarity of lines, conviction in abhinaya, and poise. Nivrritii plans to continue her dance journey, having already performed solo dances in temples and preparing for an upcoming dance production and an India tour under ARTABILITIES 4 ALL. She also aspires to pursue a career in healthcare and STEM, aiming to create medical devices.
