Noorani Parameswara Bhagavatar (also known as Palghat Parameswara Bhagavathar, 1815–1892) was a renowned Carnatic musician, composer, and instrumentalist, not a Bharatanatyam figure. Born in Noorani Agrahaaram in Palghat, Kerala, he was brought up by his uncle in Guruvayur after losing his parents at a young age. By 16, he possessed a strong grasp of music theory and practical aspects, becoming fluent in composing songs in Sanskrit and Malayalam. He journeyed to Thiruvananthapuram (Tiruvananthapuram) where he was discovered by Maharaja Swati Tirunal, who offered him training. Through intensive practice and close association with court musicians, his musical talents flourished. He was trained by Vadivelu in the royal court and became proficient in playing the violin, veena, and swarabat. Swati Tirunal appointed him as the Chief Palace Musician towards the end of his reign, a position he held for over five decades, serving four successive rulers of Travancore. Bhagavatar was recognized as a versatile vocalist and composer, known for his ragam-tanam-pallavi renditions and his unique style of singing Tanam in Ghana Ragas. He was also an excellent Harikatha exponent. His compositions, primarily in Sanskrit, resembled those of Swati Tirunal and Dikshitar, including a popular varnam in Nattai, "Sarasijanabha". He played a significant role in pedagogy, shaping instrumental and vocal practice in the 19th century.
