Nrithya Pillai is a distinguished Bharatanatyam dancer, dance composer, singer, writer, speaker, and instructor, who proudly asserts her hereditary nattuvanar-devadasi lineage. She is the Artistic Director of Rajarathnalaya, a Bharatanatyam institution founded by her maternal grandfather, Swamimalai Rajarathnam Pillai. Pillai is dedicated to preserving and reanimating the rich repertoire and the teaching and choreographic practices of her celebrated ancestors, including Vaitheeswarankoil Meenakshisundaram Pillai, T.K Swaminatha Pillai, and Padmashri Vazhuvoor B. Ramiah Pillai. Nrithya Pillai is a prominent voice challenging the power relationships and ideologies that historically made Bharatanatyam inaccessible to women of her community. She fiercely advocates for the recognition and restoration of credit for Bharatanatyam's technique, repertoire, and philosophy to the hereditary Isai Vellalar community of practitioners. Her performances and writings serve as embodied research and political interventions, addressing the upper-caste appropriation of the art form and advocating against casteism and historical misrepresentation in the contemporary dance world. Pillai's work also focuses on illuminating the legacy of her skilled ancestors, their histories, accomplishments, and contributions to the Indian cultural landscape. She did not have an arangetram, a conscious decision reflecting the historical impact of reform and reinvention on women from hereditary castes.
