Nuka Rajarathnam is a prominent figure in Indian classical dance, specifically Kathak, based in Johannesburg, South Africa. She is the founder of the Nataka Dance Company, established in 2010, which plays a significant role in promoting Indian dance in South Africa. Rajarathnam received her classical Kathak training from her mother and Guru, Padhmavathee (Prema) Nydoo. Her mother, in turn, was a disciple of the legendary Gopi Krishna Ji of the Benaras Gharana. Nuka Rajarathnam continues to advance her Kathak education through ongoing training with SKILS (School of Kathak and Interdisciplinary Learning with Shruti), founded by Shruti Patki. Initially, Nataka Dance Company offered Kathak Fusion, Bollywood, and Indian Folk Dance, but has since shifted its focus to providing in-depth training in Classical Kathak for young adults and adults. The company also offers an exclusive kids' class. Nataka Dance Company, in collaboration with SKILS, provides students with opportunities to perform in annual showcases. The curriculum at Nataka Dance Company includes both practical and theoretical aspects of Kathak, preparing students for the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Exams. Rajarathnam's work through the Nataka Dance Company solidifies a commitment to preserving and spreading the essence of Kathak in Johannesburg.
