🪔 About
Shobana Chandrakumar Pillai, known mononymously as Shobana, is a highly acclaimed Indian classical dancer, choreographer, and actress, born on March 21, 1970, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. She hails from a family deeply rooted in classical dance, being the niece of the legendary Travancore sisters—Lalita, Padmini, and Ragini—all celebrated classical Indian dancers and actresses. Shobana received her extensive training in Bharatanatyam under the tutelage of eminent gurus Chitra Visweswaran and Padma Subrahmanyam. She made her stage debut in 1984 after five years of intensive study at the Chidambaram Academy in Madras. By her twenties, she had emerged as an independent performer and choreographer, establishing her unique style characterized by fine abhinaya (expression), clarity of line, and strong rhythmic command. In 1994, Shobana founded Kalarpana, a prominent institution for classical Bharatanatyam dance in Chennai. Kalarpana aims to provide a holistic understanding of dance, encompassing practical, theoretical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual aspects, and has trained over 600 students. She has performed extensively across India and internationally, including tours in the USA, Europe, Southeast Asia, and Australia, and has collaborated with renowned musicians like Ustad Zakir Hussain and Vikku Vinayakram. Beyond her illustrious dance career, Shobana is also a celebrated film actress, having starred in over 230 films predominantly in Malayalam, as well as Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and English languages. Her contributions to the arts have earned her numerous prestigious accolades.
