Pariyanampatta Divakaran (c. 1954 – 2017) was a distinguished Indian classical dancer renowned for his contributions to Kathakali, the traditional dance-drama of Kerala. Born on Medam 29 of 1130 ME (approximately 1954) in Pariyanampatta Mana, Peringannur, Palakkad District, Kerala, he hailed from an artistic family; his father, Pariyanampatta Kunchunni Namboothiripad, was a noted artist, actor, and magician. Divakaran began his rigorous Kathakali training at the age of twelve, joining the Peroor Gandhi Seva Sadanam in 1966, where he studied for eight years. His primary guru at Sadanam was Keezhpadam Kumaran Nair, an innovative classicist of the Kalluvazhi-style Kathakali. He also received training from other eminent masters including Sadanam Balakrishnan, Sadanam Ramankutty, K.G. Vasudevan, and V.P. Ramakrishnan Nair. Further honing his skills, Divakaran pursued studies at the prestigious Kerala Kalamandalam for three years, learning under revered figures such as Kalamandalam Padmanabhan Nair, Kalamandalam Gopi, and Vazhenkada Vijayan. He specialized particularly in 'Thadi' (red beard) characters, also excelling in 'Kari' (black beard), 'Minukku' (radiant), and 'Kathi' (knife) roles. Throughout his illustrious career, Divakaran was celebrated for his versatility, adeptly portraying both pious mythological figures like Narada and Sudama, and formidable villainous characters such as Dussassanan and Kali. He was considered a frontline artiste of the four-century-old dance-drama form. His performances graced numerous stages across India and in several foreign countries, including Italy, Poland, London, and France. Beyond his performing career, Divakaran was also a dedicated teacher, imparting his knowledge at institutions like Sadanam, Kerala Kalamandalam, and the School of Drama at the University of Calicut. His significant contributions to Kathakali were recognized with the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award in 1974. He also received a Central Government scholarship, a junior fellowship, and a State Government gold medal during his student years. Pariyanampatta Divakaran passed away in late October/early November 2017 at the age of 63 due to unexpected multi-organ failure, leaving behind a rich legacy in the world of Kathakali. He was married to Usha and had a son, Sreejesh, and a daughter, Sreesha.
