Parvathi Menon is a distinguished Indian classical dancer renowned for her contributions to Kathakali, a traditionally male-dominated art form. With over 45 years of experience as of May 2019, she has performed in more than 2,500 shows across India and internationally. Menon is celebrated for breaking gender stereotypes by adeptly portraying both female ('stree vesham') and powerful male ('kathi vesham') characters, including iconic roles like Duryodhana and Ravana. Her portrayal of Duryodhana is particularly highlighted for its vigor and distinct facial expressions. Menon began her Kathakali training at the tender age of seven, under the tutelage of the legendary Guru FACT Padhmanabhan. She was an early and instrumental member of the Tripunithura Vanitha Kathakali Sangam, an pioneering all-women Kathakali troupe established in 1975 by KT Ramavarma. This troupe was noted as the only one of its kind in India during the 1970s. Her dedication to the art has garnered significant attention within the Kathakali community, although she notes that attention does not always equate to full acceptance in the male-centric world of Kathakali. Based in Kochi, Parvathi Menon continues to be an active performer, inspiring more women to take up Kathakali.
