🪔 About
Prabhu Deva, born on April 3, 1973, in Mysore, Karnataka, India, is a highly influential Indian dance choreographer, film director, producer, and actor. Inspired by his father, Mugur Sundar, a choreographer for South Indian movies, Prabhu Deva began learning dance at a young age, including Indian classical dance forms such as Bharatanatyam from Dharmaraj and Udupi Lakshminarayanan, alongside Western styles. He made his debut as a background dancer in the late 1980s and his first venture as a choreographer was in 1989. Deva quickly rose to prominence for his unique and energetic dance style, often dubbed "India's Michael Jackson". His choreography in films like "Kaadhalan" (1994) and "Minsara Kanavu" (1997) earned him widespread acclaim and National Film Awards. He successfully transitioned into acting, starring in numerous commercially successful films across Tamil, Hindi, and Telugu languages. Later, he ventured into film direction, helming several blockbuster movies. Prabhu Deva also established Prabhu Deva's Dance Academy, with a presence in cities like Singapore and Chennai, aiming to nurture dance talent. While his early training included Bharatanatyam, his renown stems from his significant contributions to Indian cinema as a multifaceted dance and film personality, rather than as a traditional classical dance guru. Awards & Honours: Padma Shri (2019), National Film Award for Best Choreography (1996), National Film Award for Best Choreography (2004), Filmfare Award South for Best Choreography (2006), Filmfare Award South for Best Choreography (2019), Kalaimamani Award (2015), Nandi Award for Best Dance Choreographer (2005), Cinema Express Award - Best Dance Master (1993), Technical Award - Best Choreography (2005), Technical Award - Best Choreography (2006).
