Preethi Bharadwaj is a prominent Indian classical dancer, teacher, choreographer, and actress, primarily known for her work in Bharatanatyam and Indian Contemporary Dance. She began her Bharatanatyam training at the age of seven or nine under Gurus B. Bhanumati and Sheela Chandrashekar at Nrityakalamandiram. Her artistic journey also includes early training in Carnatic music from the age of four, guided by her father, S Balasubramanyam, a veteran multi-percussionist. Bharadwaj has also received training in Nattuvangam, contemporary dance, yoga, and martial arts, including a one-month intensive in Kalaripayattu. As a freelance artist, Preethi Bharadwaj has performed extensively across India and internationally, including at events like the NH7 Weekender and the Bali International Dance Festival. She has been a principal soloist with the Bharatanjali and Punyah dance companies and was a resident dancer at the Play Practice Residency in 2015. Her notable performances include participating in the Chandralekha Memorial event in 2016, where she revived an excerpt from Chandralekha's 1991 piece 'Sri', and being an understudy for Preethi Athreya's choreographic work 'Conditions of Carriage' in the same year. Bharadwaj is also recognized for her innovative choreographic work, such as "Me and My Trash," which premiered in late 2023 and was performed in August 2023 and February 2024. She is based in Bangalore and Chennai and is actively involved in teaching and choreographing, contributing to the rising popularity of Bharatanatyam in India.
