🪔 About
Pritha Singh is a distinguished multi-disciplinary artist and a significant figure in the preservation and promotion of Indo-Caribbean heritage art forms, with a strong foundation in Indian classical dance, particularly Kathak. Her artistic journey began at the age of five, encompassing a diverse range of dance styles. She received her Kathak training under the tutelage of Gora Singh and the renowned Kathak exponent Kamudini Lakhia. Beyond Kathak, her early education included Ballet with Prima Ballerina Helen Taitt, Caribbean Folk Singing and Dancing under Doris Harper-Wills and Malcolm Hall, and European Line Dancing with Jim Graham. She also learned Rajdhar, Natya, and Indian Leela (dance-dramas) from her parents, Hari and Rajkumari Singh. In 1995, Pritha Singh co-founded the Rajkumari Cultural Center with her late brother, Gora Singh, a Kathak Dance Exponent and cultural activist. Based in the New York metropolitan area, the center is dedicated to serving Indo-Caribbean communities by pioneering and instituting programs critical to their cultural life. Singh's work focuses on neglected heritage art forms, many of which are unique variations evolved from the East Indian Diaspora in Guyana, Suriname, the Caribbean, and New York. Her extensive career also includes arts management, theater and television production, corporate management, and marketing. As a playwright, her notable works include "Women of the Mahabarata" (2003) and "The Vivaha (Wedding House) Series" of dance-dramas, which she has written exclusively for the Rajkumari Center's Annual Kitchrie Festivals since 1998. Pritha Singh hails from a family with a five-generation legacy of leadership in Indian and Caribbean political, intellectual, and cultural life.
