Pandit Kartik Ram (1910-?) was a legendary Kathak dancer and guru, renowned as a titan of the Raigarh Gharana, a distinct school of Kathak that flourished under the patronage of Raja Chakradhar Singh of Raigarh. Born in 1910 in Bhanwarmal village, Bilaspur district (now Chhattisgarh), Kartik Ram's journey began as a child artist performing 'Gammat Nacha' (folk dance) with his uncle Makhanlal's troupe. His talent was discovered by Raja Chakradhar Singh at a Ganesh fair when Kartik Ram was around 10 or 11 years old. Impressed by his performance, the Raja took him under his wing, arranging for his comprehensive training in music and dance. Kartik Ram received his initial training from Pt. Shivnarayan. He then underwent intensive Kathak training under eminent gurus such as Pt. Jailal, Achhan Maharaj, Shambhu Maharaj, and Lachhu Maharaj. He mastered 'layakari' (rhythmic play) and speed from Shambhu Maharaj, 'abhinaya' (expressive storytelling) from Lachhu Maharaj, and 'tayyari' (preparation) from Achhan Maharaj. As a court dancer for Raja Chakradhar Singh, Kartik Ram, alongside Pt. Kalyan Das, became one of the "two pillars" of the Raigarh style. He was celebrated for his unique ability to blend folk dance sensibilities with the rigorous demands of classical Kathak, demonstrating extraordinary command over complex rhythms, intricate footwork, and expressive storytelling. He mastered and performed complex compositions like Kavit Chhand and Parans, which remain hallmarks of the Raigarh repertoire. Kartik Ram gained national recognition after his performances at various music conferences, including the Music Conference in Allahabad, and other major events across India in cities like Jalandhar, Meerut, Mirzapur, and Karachi. After the era of princely states, he dedicated his life to preserving and propagating the Raigarh Gharana, which might otherwise have faded into obscurity. He served as a Kathak dance teacher at the Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalaya in Khairagarh and the Chakradhar Nritya Kendra in Bhopal, mentoring a new generation of dancers. For his immense contributions to Indian classical dance, Pt. Kartik Ram was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 1978 and the Shikhar Samman by the Government of Madhya Pradesh in 1980-81. He is remembered as a cultural architect who successfully bridged traditional folk arts with classical court dance, leaving an indelible mark on the Kathak tradition.
