Pandit Krishan Mohan Maharaj, a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, is a leading exponent of the Kathak dance form, particularly representing the illustrious Lucknow Kalka-Bindadin Gharana. Born on September 20, 1954, he hails from a revered lineage of Kathak dancers, being the eldest son of the legendary Kathak guru Pandit Shambhu Maharaj and a cousin of the iconic Pandit Birju Maharaj. His rigorous training in Kathak commenced in his childhood under the tutelage of his father, Pandit Shambhu Maharaj. Demonstrating prodigious talent, he began performing alongside his father at the tender age of eight. Following the untimely demise of his father in 1970, Pandit Krishan Mohan Maharaj continued his unwavering dedication to the art form. His exceptional abilities were recognized with a scholarship from the Kathak Kendra and the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Throughout his illustrious career, Pandit Krishan Mohan Maharaj has served as a senior Kathak guru at the National Institute Kathak Kendra in New Delhi, from which he is now retired. He is widely regarded as a torchbearer of his ancient tradition and great lineage, known for his signature style that exhibits a tight command over 'layakari' (rhythmic virtuosity) and 'tayyari' (preparedness and technical skill). Beyond his prowess as a dancer, he is also a gifted percussionist, proficient in playing tabla, pakhawaj, and various folk drums. Pandit Krishan Mohan Maharaj is an outstanding artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and an 'A' grade artist of Delhi Doordarshan. The ICCR New Delhi honored him as a Kathak Ambassador under Indo-Bangladesh Cultural Relations Exchange Programmes, reflecting his international contributions. He has toured extensively both within India and abroad, sharing his profound knowledge and artistry. His contributions to Kathak have been recognized with prestigious accolades, including the Nritya Ratan and a Gold Medal in 1973 from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad. He is also slated to receive the esteemed Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2025, a testament to his enduring legacy and guidance to countless disciples.
