Dr. R. Sathyanarayana (also known as Mahamahopadhyaya Dr. R. Sathyanarayana), born on May 9, 1927, in Mysore, India, was a distinguished musicologist, dance scholar, and Indologist. He passed away on January 16, 2020, at the age of 92, in Mysore. His extensive academic background included a Master's degree in Chemistry from the University of Mysore, a PhD, and multiple D.Litt. degrees from various universities, including Mysore University, Hampi University, and Gangubhai Hangal Music University of Mysore. Dr. Sathyanarayana's career was marked by a profound dedication to both science and arts. From 1949 to 1984, he served as a chemistry professor at Sarada Vilas College, while simultaneously teaching Karnataka music. He began teaching musicology and danceology in 1951, continuing until his demise. He was a prolific author, penning numerous treatises in Sanskrit on dance and music, including notable works such as "Pundarikamala," "Shruti: The Scalic Foundation," "Suladis and Ugabhogas of Karnataka Music," "Karnataka Sangeetha Vahini," and "Studies in Indian Dance." He also authored a three-volume classic on Srividya Tantra, "Srividya Shodashika," in Kannada. Recognized internationally as an authority on Indian music and dance, Dr. Sathyanarayana was a public speaker on Indological disciplines and actively participated in government-sponsored music festivals and international seminars. He held the position of President of the Indian Music Congress. His scholarly contributions and dedication earned him numerous prestigious awards and honorific titles throughout his life.
