Radhika Kannan is an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer and educator based in the Bay Area, California. She commenced her training in this South Indian classical art form at the age of five. Kannan is a dedicated disciple of Smt. Mythili Kumar, the Artistic Director of the Abhinaya Dance Company in San Jose, California. She is also currently continuing her advanced training under the tutelage of Kalaimamani Guru Madurai R. Muralidharan. Her extensive performance career includes appearances at over 50 venues across both the United States and India. In 1993, Radhika Kannan was honored with the prestigious Balasaraswathi Award for Excellence in Dance, recognizing her talent and commitment to the art form. She hails from a family deeply rooted in South Indian Carnatic classical music, being the granddaughter of the renowned composer and vocalist Sri P.V. Natarajan, and the daughter of vocalist Vasanthi Kannan. Her artistic contributions extend to choreography, as she created and performed pieces based on her grandfather's compositions in both 2000 and 2003. Committed to nurturing the next generation of Bharatanatyam artists, Radhika Kannan founded the Alarippu Dance School in 2012. Through her institution, she aims to instill a profound artistic vision in her students. Born and raised in California, she utilizes her understanding of American culture to forge strong connections with her students. In addition to her dance endeavors, she serves as the Vice Principal of a K-8 Elementary School, applying her pedagogical insights to her dance instruction by customizing classes to meet individual student needs.
