🪔 About

Raja Reddy, born on October 6, 1943, in Narsapuram, Andhra Pradesh, India, is a globally celebrated Kuchipudi dancer, guru, and choreographer. His early interest in dance was sparked by observing touring Kuchipudi Bhagavatam folk troupes in his childhood. He received rigorous training in Kuchipudi under the tutelage of Guru Vedantam Prahlada Sarma at Sri Siddhendra Kalakshetram in Kuchipudi village and Kalakshetram, Eluru. Furthering his artistic education, Reddy, along with Radha Reddy, studied choreography and other stage arts under Guru Maya Rao at the Natya Ballet Centre in Delhi in 1966, supported by a Government of Andhra Pradesh scholarship. He also briefly explored Kathak at the Music College, Hyderabad. Raja Reddy, alongside his wife Radha Reddy, formed the renowned Raja-Radha Reddy duo, making their professional debut in December 1966 at the Youth Festival in Delhi. They are widely credited with revitalizing Kuchipudi, giving it a new dimension while preserving its traditional essence. Their performances have graced international stages, including the Avignon International Dance Festival in France in 1974, the Salzburg Festival in Austria, and various Festivals of India across the USA, UK, and Bangladesh. Notably, Raja Reddy performed for U.S. President Gerald Ford. In the 1970s, he was offered a faculty position at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York but declined to dedicate himself to promoting Kuchipudi globally. Their extensive career spans over five decades, with performances in more than 105 countries. In 2010, Raja and Radha Reddy choreographed a significant segment for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. In 1976, Raja Reddy, along with Radha Reddy and Kaushalya Reddy, co-founded Natya Tarangini in Saket, New Delhi. This institution is dedicated to preserving, propagating, and teaching Kuchipudi, nurturing generations of dancers. Through Natya Tarangini, they host annual events like the "Parampara Series," showcasing emerging talents and traditional repertoires. Their teaching legacy extends to numerous disciples, including their daughters Yamini and Bhavana Reddy, and senior disciple Rashmi Vaidialingam, who continue to carry forward the Kuchipudi tradition. Awards & Honours: Padma Shri (1984), Sahitya Kala Parishad Award (1986), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1991), Nritya Choodamani Award (1993), Padma Bhushan (2000), Honorary Doctorates by the University of Hyderabad (2010), Kalidas Samman, Lifetime Achievement Award — The Rotary Club Delhi, Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi.
