Rajan Poduval is a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, primarily known for his contributions to Kathakali and as a Chenda artist. Born in 1957, he hails from a family deeply rooted in the arts, being the son of the late Kathakali maestro and Chenda artist, Kalamandalam Krishnankutty Poduval, and Late Radha Poduvalsiar. From a very young age, Poduval received foundational training in Chenda, dance, music, and various temple rituals from his father. He further honed his skills in Kathakali dance through scientific training under the tutelage of Guru Kalamandalam Govindankutty. Throughout his career, Rajan Poduval has actively participated in numerous Kathakali and Dance Drama competitions organized by institutions such as Calcutta Kalamandalam. He has also been instrumental in organizing various cultural shows and festivals across India, showcasing a wide array of performing artists in classical forms like Chendamelam, Panchavadyam, Thayambaka, Chakyarkoothu, Ottanthullal, Mohiniyattom, Bharathanatyam, and Kathakali. Poduval is recognized for his significant efforts in the revival of traditional art forms. He was awarded a Senior Fellowship from the Ministry of Culture for his work in reviving the extinct art form Ashtapadiyattam, which he successfully completed and presented on stage to wide acclaim. Additionally, he revived and staged the Kathakali play "Bheeshmapratignya," originally written by his father, Kalamandalam Krishnankutty Poduval, which also garnered significant appreciation from art enthusiasts. His dedication to preserving and promoting his father's legacy is further evident in his production of a documentary film on Kalamandalam Krishnankutty Poduval, for which he was honored by Kalakshetra, Chennai, during their Kathakali Festival in September 2009.
