Raji Krishnan, formally known as Rajalakshmi Krishna, is a distinguished Bharatanatyam performer, instructor, and choreographer, boasting over 35 years of significant contributions to the Indian classical dance form. Her profound journey in Bharatanatyam commenced at the tender age of six, where she began her training under the esteemed Guru Kalaimamani Thanjai Jayalakshmi Arunachalam Pillai. This rigorous early training culminated in her Arangetram in 1986, marking her official debut as a Bharatanatyam dancer. She further honed her skills and deepened her understanding of the art form through advanced training with her grand-uncle, the legendary Natayacharya Kalaimamani K R Radhakrishnan, a revered maestro of the Vazhuvoor tradition. Academically, Guru Rajalakshmi Krishna has demonstrated exceptional prowess, securing a master's degree in Bharatanatyam with distinction. Her academic excellence was further recognized when she was awarded a prestigious Gold Medal from The Madras Music College, an accolade that highlights her outstanding achievements and dedication to the art of Bharatanatyam. Her teaching career began in Chennai, India, in 1994, where she dedicated herself to developing numerous dance productions. Many of these productions featured original music compositions by her guru, K R Radhakrishnan, showcasing a deep artistic collaboration. In 2015, Guru Rajalakshmi Krishna expanded her influence by initiating her teaching journey in the United States, where she has been instrumental in promoting the rich traditions of Bharatanatyam. She is the esteemed founder and principal of Shreebala Nrithyalaya Bharatanatyam School, located in Frisco, Texas. This institution is renowned for its high standards and innovative choreography, which steadfastly adheres to the authentic Vazhuvoor tradition, with a particular focus on preparing students for exceptional Margam presentations. As a seasoned performer, Raji Krishnan has graced numerous prestigious Sabhas and temples across both India and the USA, captivating audiences with her artistry. Her performances have also been featured on television, further broadening her reach. Her unwavering commitment to the art form is evident in her tireless efforts to cultivate and inspire the next generation of Bharatanatyam artists. Her students have achieved notable success, having the honor of performing on various esteemed platforms in both the United States and India, including the renowned Chennai Margazhi festival and in sacred venues such as the Chidambaram and Kapaleeshwarar temples, underscoring the prominence and quality of her school's training.
