Rashme Hegde Gopi is a celebrated Indian classical dancer, choreographer, and cultural impresario known for her profound contributions to various classical dance forms and her efforts in cultural preservation and promotion. Her journey in dance began at a very young age, with her first stage performance at four and her arangetram at nineteen. She is primarily a Bharatanatyam dancer, having honed her fluidity in the style under the tutelage of Guru Muttaya and Guru Kapil of the legendary Pandanallur school. Her diverse repertoire also includes Kuchipudi, which she studied under Shrimati Suna Dvi, and Mohiniattam. Furthermore, she undertook an intense exploration of Navajanardana Parijatam, a rare temple dance repertoire from Andhra Pradesh, guided by the legendary Guru Dr. Nataraja Ramakrishna. She also learned Andhra Natyam from Dr. Nataraja Ramakrishna. Rashme Hegde Gopi has graced stages across the world, enchanting audiences with her mastery, diverse repertoire, and deep emotiveness. Beyond performing, she evolved into a prolific choreographer, creating evocative pieces such as "Ritu Chakra" (the cyclical journey of the seasons), "Omarini" (exploring primordial energy), "Sahasara" (harmonizing mystic tantra), and "Amita Mantana" (the endless quest for perfection and immortality). Notably, she choreographed over 500 artists for the inauguration ceremony of the National Games in 1994, creating "Newura Cave," a complex piece blending tribal, Yakshagana, and Kalaripayattu dancers with folk and classical forms. Her choreography "One World Family" was staged during the Art of Living Foundation's silver jubilee in Berlin. A visionary cultural revivalist, Rashme Hegde Gopi founded Rudraksha in 1992, an artistic space promoting tribal and folk dance forms. In 2002, she established the Shankaraa Foundation in Bengaluru, Karnataka, as a charitable trust and a cultural sanctum dedicated to nurturing all forms of creative expression. Shankaraa serves as a bridge between artists and art lovers, offering an academy for traditional arts, workshops, and a council for crafts. The foundation also houses a museum of performing arts, Purvaranga, which archives materials related to dance, including items from renowned dancers like U.S. Krishna Rao and Maya Rao. Her tireless efforts have earned her significant recognition, including the Karnataka Sangeeta Nritya Academy Award for Kuchipudi and Mohiniattam in 2012, the Karnataka Kalashree Award, and the State Rajyotsava honor. She is considered a cultural ambassador of arts from India, providing platforms for budding artists to showcase their talents to international audiences.
