Rathna Kumar, affectionately known as "Rathna Papa" during her childhood, is an internationally renowned Indian classical dancer, teacher, and choreographer. Born into a family of musicians and writers, she began her dance training at a very young age. She received her foundational training in Bharatanatyam under Guru K.J. Sarasa, who accepted her as her first student. Her journey into Kuchipudi began under gurus Vedantam Jagannatha Sharma and Vempati Pedda Satyam, and she later refined her technique under the tutelage of Guru Vempati Chinna Satyam at the Kuchipudi Art Academy in Chennai. She also explored other classical forms, including Kathak, Mohiniyattam, and Odissi, to enrich her understanding of movement. In 1975, after her marriage, Rathna Kumar moved to Houston, Texas, USA, where she initially intended to pursue a PhD in English at Rice University. However, her passion for dance led her to establish the Anjali Center for Performing Arts in 1975, which became the first Indian dance school in Texas and one of the first in the United States. She later founded the Samskriti Society for Indian Performing Arts in Houston in 1994, further contributing to the promotion of Indian classical arts. Since 2002, she has served as a Dance Instructor at Rice University. Rathna Kumar is also the author of two illustrated books on the fundamental techniques of Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. Over her extensive career, she has trained more than 2000 students from diverse backgrounds. In 2026, she completes 75 years in dance, continuing to emphasize that one remains a student throughout their life in art.
