Revathi Ramachandran is a distinguished Indian Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, teacher, and arts administrator, renowned for her mastery of Shuddha Nrittam, a pure rhythmic dance tradition. Born on May 21, 1960, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, she was introduced to dance by her mother, Jaya Venkataraman. Ramachandran received her primary formal training in the Melattur style of Bharatanatyam under Guru Mangudi Dorairaja Iyer, whose lineage she is recognized as the sole exponent of Shuddha Nrittam, a temple dance form he revived. Her arangetram, or debut performance, took place in 1973. Complementing her Bharatanatyam training, she pursued specialized instruction in nattuvangam from Guru Bhagavatulu Sitarama Sharma, veena from Kalpagam Swaminathan, and Kuchipudi from the renowned Guru Vempati Chinna Satyam. An A-grade artist of Doordarshan, Ramachandran has performed extensively across India and internationally, including in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, and Singapore. Her professional performances emphasize the Melattur style, particularly Shuddha Nrittam, focusing on precise footwork and rhythmic complexity. She has also choreographed and directed several thematic dance-dramas, such as "Ambalathil Aadum Jyothi" (1994), "Jaya Jaya Bharath" (1997), "Lakshmi Vaibhavam" (2001), "Om Saravana Bhava" (2003), and "Dayinee" (2008). In 1987, Revathi Ramachandran founded Kalasadhanalaya in Chennai, an institution dedicated to training students in Shuddha Nrittam and traditional Bharatanatyam margam, along with theoretical aspects. She also served as the Director of the Kalakshetra Foundation in Chennai, one of India's premier institutions for classical arts, from April 2018 to October 2023. During her tenure, she oversaw infrastructure enhancements and various programs for dance preservation and innovation. Ramachandran has also contributed to scholarly research on temple traditions like Bhagavatha Mela, for which she received a fellowship from India's Ministry of Human Resource Development.
