🪔 About
S. Kumar is a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, renowned for his profound contributions to the Melattur Bhagavata Mela tradition. Born in 1958, he is the grandson of Sri V. Ganesa Iyer, who is credited with reviving this ancient dance-drama art form in 1938 in Melattur, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu. Kumar received his training from his father, the esteemed 'Kalaimamani' G. Swaminathan, and was also groomed by other maestros of Melattur Bhagavata Mela, including Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee Balu Bhagavatar. Kumar has dedicated over four decades to the Bhagavata Mela, actively participating and performing pivotal roles such as Hiranyakasipu, Harischandran, and Kamsan. His debut in a leading role was in 1978, portraying Hiranyakasipu in the Prahlada Charitam Natakam. He later took on his father's significant roles, including Harischandran and Dharma Devan, when his father faced vocal cord issues. His performances are noted for their energy and enthusiasm, particularly in challenging characters. Currently, S. Kumar serves as the Managing Trustee and a senior artiste of the Melattur Bhagavata Mela Natya Nataka Sangam. Following the demise of his elder brother, Sri S. Natarajan, a legendary figure in Bhagavata Mela, Kumar assumed the crucial responsibility of continuing the annual festival and upholding the tradition. His efforts include livestreaming performances and creating videos to demystify the art form for a global audience. In recognition of his significant contributions to Indian classical dance, S. Kumar was honored with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar Award in 2025. He is also widely referred to as 'Kalaimamani', an esteemed state award for excellence in arts. Through his leadership and artistic dedication, S. Kumar continues to preserve and promote the rich heritage of Melattur Bhagavata Mela. Awards & Honours: Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar Award (2025), Kalaimamani.
