Dr. A.K. Sabhapathy is a distinguished figure in the world of Kathakali, renowned for his profound dedication to the classical Indian dance form despite his primary profession as a general surgeon. Born on March 6, 1935, he is set to celebrate his 90th birthday in 2025. Sabhapathy's journey into Kathakali began in the 1970s, inspired by his father, Krishna Iyer, a prominent lawyer and Kathakali enthusiast. Although he did not undergo traditional Kathakali training, his passion led him to perform the art form for over 45 years. A reputed general surgeon, Dr. Sabhapathy completed his MS in general surgery in Mumbai and returned to Kochi in 1965, where he established Krishna Hospital in 1967. He ceased medical practice in 2020 following a COVID-19 infection. For Dr. Sabhapathy, Kathakali transcends mere performance; he views it as a medium for spiritual pursuit and believes that art enhances a surgeon's empathy and skill. He is particularly known for his portrayal of Kuchela in "Kuchelavrutham," a role he has performed for over 40 years at the Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple on Kuchela day. He also sponsors these annual performances. His extensive repertoire includes a wide array of Kathakali characters such as Dushasana (red beard), Duryodhana (kathi), Hanuman (white beard), Kattalan or Nishada (black beard), Sri Krishna (satvika), and even the female character Kunthi from "Karna Sapadham." Dr. Sabhapathy has graced stages in various cities, including Mumbai, Chennai, and Singapore, and has had the honor of performing alongside Kathakali stalwarts like Kalamandalam Gopi and Madavoor Vasudevan Nair. His performances often extend beyond three hours, during which he deeply connects with the audience, particularly in his beloved role as Kuchela.
