Sachin Shankar (September 24, 1924 – May 10, 2005) was a pioneering Indian dancer and choreographer, recognized for his significant contributions to contemporary Indian dance. Born in Benaras (now Varanasi), Uttar Pradesh, to Jitendra and Kalidevi Shankar, he was a cousin and one of the first students of the legendary Uday Shankar at his Almora studio. After the Almora institution closed, Sachin Shankar moved to Mumbai, where he established his own ballet unit in 1953. Shankar was a trailblazer who developed his unique dance vocabulary, often referred to as "free-dance" or "contemporary dance," distinct from traditional Indian classical forms. Over five decades, he choreographed and presented more than 40 ballets, exploring diverse themes ranging from vibrant social commentaries like "Cricket," "Naa," "Train," and "Kite Flying" to profound mythological and historical narratives such as "Shiva-Parvati," "Rama," and "Chhatrapati Shivaji." His notable works also included "Ghost," "Volga to Ganga," "Peasants Dream," "Young India," "Gandhi," "Gandhi-Jinnah," and "The Kissan Struggle," many of which were associated with the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) movement. Sachin Shankar collaborated with eminent musicians of his time, including Vishnudas Shirali, Salil Chowdhury, Vijay Raghav Rao, and Pandit Ravi Shankar, who composed scores for his ballets. Beyond the stage, he also worked as a dance master and choreographer in Bollywood, contributing to films like "Madhumati" (1958) and "Munimji" (1955). His innovative approach to dance, though sometimes dismissed by the Delhi establishment as "filmy," earned him a dedicated following in Mumbai. In recognition of his enduring impact on Indian dance, Sachin Shankar received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 'Creative Dance' in 1992.
