🪔 About

Sangeeta Bhuyan Mehta is a distinguished Indian classical dancer and a key figure in the renowned Pushpanjali Cultural Academy, based in Guwahati, India. She co-directs the academy alongside her sisters, Vanita Bhuyan Nagpal and Simran Bhuyan Raheja. The institution carries a rich legacy, having been founded by their mother, the late Padmashree awardee Pushpa Bhuyan. Pushpa Bhuyan was a legendary classical dancer, widely credited for her pivotal role in popularizing Sattriya, the classical dance form of Assam. Her foundational training included Bharatanatyam at the esteemed Kalakshetra, and she subsequently imparted her extensive knowledge and artistry to her three daughters, including Sangeeta. Sangeeta Bhuyan Mehta's expertise spans multiple Indian classical dance forms, notably Bharatanatyam, Kathak, and Sattriya. Demonstrating an innovative approach, she and her sisters have developed a unique module that synergizes the intricate technicalities of these classical dances—such as mudras, postures, and footwork—with yoga asanas. This fusion forms the basis of their "Pushpanjali Holistic Wellness Workshops," which are designed to promote fitness and mindfulness through the expressive elements of classical dance. These workshops have garnered significant attention, with performances and sessions conducted across India and internationally. Sangeeta advocates for this contemporary method of dance education, believing it offers a more accessible and result-oriented engagement with classical arts compared to traditional performances, thereby appealing to a wider demographic. Beyond her teaching and administrative roles, Sangeeta Bhuyan Mehta is also an accomplished choreographer, having created numerous dance compositions. The Pushpanjali Cultural Academy, established in 1988, is recognized for its national diplomas and has nurtured thousands of students, playing a crucial role in elevating classical dance forms in Assam and bringing Sattriya dance to a global audience.
