Sanju Sahai, also known as Vishnu Sahai, is widely recognized as one of the finest and most sought-after Tabla players of his generation. He is a torchbearer of the Benares Gharana, representing the sixth generation of Tabla players in this esteemed lineage, founded by Pandit Ram Sahai. Sanju Sahai began his musical journey at an early age, demonstrating prodigious talent. He received his training under the tutelage of his illustrious father and guru, Pandit Sharda Sahai Ji, who is credited with spreading awareness of the Tabla in both the East and West. As a child prodigy, Sanju Sahai gave his first solo Tabla performance at a major festival in Benares at the tender age of nine, a milestone he himself states occurred on the sacred stage of the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Mandir. He furthered his academic musical education, earning his Bachelor of Music at 13 and Master of Music at 18 years of age. His career now spans more than four decades, during which his captivating performances have graced prestigious concert halls worldwide, including the Sydney Opera House, Royal Albert Hall, and Carnegie Hall. Sahai is celebrated for his powerful, virtuosic, and spontaneous Tabla playing, which mesmerizes audiences. While deeply rooted in traditional Indian Classical music, he has also embraced collaborations across diverse genres such as Jazz, Egyptian, Flamenco, Opera, Western Classical, hip hop, folk, and blues, as well as contemporary music and dance. His significant contributions to Indian classical dance are evident through his accompaniment of legendary dancers, including Kathak maestros Pandit Birju Maharaj, Natraj Gopi Krishna, and Smt Sitara Devi. Beyond performing, Sanju Sahai is dedicated to musical education, regularly conducting lecture demonstrations, workshops, and residencies. He has served as a Tabla tutor at SOAS London University for over 15 years and was also the Percussion Conductor of the South Asian music youth orchestra (SAMYO). He is based in London, UK.
