Santanu Roy is a distinguished Bharatanatyam artist, educator, and choreographer based in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. He is celebrated for his rigorous adherence to traditional technique, particularly the Kalakshetra Bani, balanced with a visionary approach to contemporary choreography. Roy holds a Master's degree in Bharatanatyam from Tamil University, Thanjavur, and has received training under the guidance of Sri Samrat Dutta. His performances also feature compositions and choreography by Guru Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale. Recognized as an A+ Grade Artist by the Eastern Zonal Cultural Center (EZCC), Ministry of Culture, Government of India, and a Graded Artist (Grade B / B-High) by Doordarshan Kendra, New Delhi, Santanu Roy has established himself as a prominent figure in India's classical dance landscape. His dedication to Bharatanatyam has been honored with several accolades, including the West Bengal State Music Academy Award, the Sanjukta Panigrahi Memorial Award bestowed by the Sri Aurobindo Institute of Culture, and the Nritya Adwitiya Samman Award. Roy's career spans prestigious national and international stages. As a cultural representative, he has performed across eight cities in Russia (Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Pskov, Vladivostok, Blagoveshchensk, Ulan-Ude, Sochi, and Ufa) through the ICCR Festival of Indian Culture, and in Bangladesh under the auspices of the High Commission. Nationally, he has performed in major cultural hubs such as Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Bangalore. He frequently performs acclaimed duet performances with Sri Samrat Dutta under the Angamantra banner, including a captivating Bharatanatyam duet at the 54th All India Bhaskar Rao Nritya and Sangeet Sammelan in Chandigarh on March 28, 2025. Beyond performing, Santanu Roy is a dedicated educator. He serves as a Senior Faculty & Teacher, Senior Repertory Member, Social Administrator, and Assistant Secretary at Angamantra - An Institute of Dance in Kolkata, where he mentors the next generation of dancers. He is also the Founder and Director of Kalāspanda Academy, an organization dedicated to promoting Indian classical arts. In 2020, he co-founded Bandish Arts with Swati Atmanathan. Roy actively engages in cross-genre and experimental projects with leading artists in Odissi, Manipuri, and Kathak. He recently conducted an inspiring dance workshop for senior students of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi on August 16, 2026. His work is characterized by rhythmic precision, profound expressive depth (Abhinaya), and a steadfast commitment to the evolution of the Kalakshetra Bani.
