🪔 About
Saranka Gunaseelan is a dedicated Bharatanatyam dancer, teacher, choreographer, and nattuvanar, who plays a pivotal role in the Indian classical dance scene in London, UK. She is the daughter and a devoted disciple of Sangeetha Vidwan Smt. Pathmini Gunaseelan, the highly respected founder and director of Narthana Kalalayam. Established in 1985, Narthana Kalalayam is a prominent institution that offers comprehensive training in Bharatanatyam, alongside vocal and violin classes, and has been instrumental in guiding hundreds of aspiring dancers. Saranka's formal debut in Bharatanatyam, her 20th Arangetram, took place in 2005. This significant milestone marked the beginning of her professional journey in the art form. The following year, in 2006, she commenced her teaching career within Narthana Kalalayam, contributing to the academy's mission of nurturing new talent and preserving the classical dance tradition. Her expertise extends beyond performance and teaching to the technical aspects of Bharatanatyam production. In 2018, Saranka demonstrated her proficiency in both choreography and nattuvangam by jointly undertaking these roles for an Arangetram. As an active performer, Saranka was part of the Narthana Kalalayam student group that embarked on the "South India Dance tour 2024." During this tour, she performed in the dance drama "Sivagangai Chenthee" across various esteemed venues in India, including Chennai, Thanjavur, and Madurai, showcasing her artistry on an international stage. Through her continuous involvement in Narthana Kalalayam, Saranka Gunaseelan not only perpetuates the rich legacy of Bharatanatyam but also upholds the high standards established by her mother, Smt. Pathmini Gunaseelan, who is renowned for her innovative dance productions and her significant contributions as the Chief Examiner for Bharatanatyam at the Academy of Fine Arts (London). Saranka's dedication ensures the continuation of this vital cultural heritage for future generations.
