Selvi Sureswaran

Selvi Sureswaran is a prominent Bharathanatyam dancer, teacher, and the Managing Director of Sri Abiramy Dance Academy, a leading institution established in 1995 to preserve and nurture South Indian classical dance in Ontario, Canada. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka, where she was also a fully trained professional teacher before migrating to Canada. Her extensive Bharathanatyam training began under the late Mr. Aerampu Supaiah and continued for fifteen years with his daughter, Mrs. Shanthini Sivanasan, at “Kalapavanam” in Kokuvil, Sri Lanka. Driven by her passion for dance, she pursued in-depth choreographies of the Dhananjayans, receiving direct training from Bharata Kalanjali. Selvi Sureswaran also received training in "Natuvangam" (music composition) from internationally renowned dancer and choreographer Hari Krishnan, and further mastered Nattuvangam under the guidance of the late Guru Adyar Lakshmanan. Throughout her career, Selvi Sureswaran has performed Bharathanatyam with world-renowned artists such as Janak Khendry, Lata Pada, Hari Krishnan, Gopu Kiran, and Divya Shiva Sundar, showcasing her talent in Europe, Sri Lanka, India, and North America. Under her leadership, Sri Abiramy Dance Academy conducts classes in Mississauga, Scarborough, and the Waterloo region, offering over 50 programs annually. She has guided 24 students to complete their arangetrams, with 20 arangetrams to her credit. Her students have also performed at significant events, including a one-hour solo Bharathanatyam performance at the Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival in the US in 2016.
