Senthilselvi Sureswaran

Selvi Sureswaran is a prominent Bharatanatyam dancer, teacher, and institution head based in Ontario, Canada. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka. Her Bharatanatyam training commenced under the late Mr. Aerampu Supaiah and continued for fifteen years with his daughter, Mrs. Shanthini Sivanasan, at “Kalapavanam” Kokuvil, Sri Lanka. Sureswaran further enhanced her expertise by learning in-depth choreographies directly from Bharata Kalanjali. She also received training in Nattuvangam from internationally renowned dancer choreographer Hari Krishnan and later mastered it under the guidance of the late guru Adyar Lakshmanan. Throughout her career, Sureswaran has performed Bharatanatyam with acclaimed artists such as Janak Khendry, Lata Pada, Hari Krishnan, Gopu Kiran, and Divya Shiva Sundar, showcasing her talent across Europe, Sri Lanka, India, and North America. In 1995, she founded the Sri Abiramy Dance Academy in Canada, an organization dedicated to preserving and nurturing South Indian classical dance among Canadians and contributing to the cultural mosaic of Ontario. The academy conducts classes in Mississauga, Scarborough, and the Waterloo region, offering over 50 programs annually. Sureswaran's contributions to the arts have been recognized with several awards, including the “Adal Arasi” in 2003 from the Tamil Cultural Association of Waterloo Region, the “Naatiya Sironmani” title from Sri Varasiddhi Vinayagar Devasthanam in Toronto, Canada, and the Toronto District School Board’s “Diversity Award” in 2014 for her outstanding contribution to the South Asian community. She has guided 24 students through their arangetrams and conducts workshops with world-renowned artists like Sri V.P. Dhananjayan and Shantha Dhananjayan.
