Seshakamal Iyengar is a distinguished professional Bharatanatyam dancer with a career spanning over 35 years in the intricate art form. His journey into Bharatanatyam began at the tender age of nine, culminating in his arangetram, or formal graduation, in 1991. Currently based in Montreal, Canada, Iyengar has established himself not only as a performer but also as a dedicated educator and choreographer. He is the founder and director of Swara Kamalam, his own institution, where he meticulously trains students in the traditional Pandanallur style of Bharatanatyam. Additionally, he teaches the Mysuru style of Veena, showcasing his versatility across Indian classical arts. Iyengar is particularly renowned for his innovative approach to Bharatanatyam, utilizing the ancient dance form to articulate and explore pressing contemporary social and environmental issues. He has authored and choreographed a significant body of work that delves into themes such as climate change, the tragic Bhopal Disaster, the Black July pogrom, and the historical Indian famines. For instance, his performance on the Bhopal Disaster depicted the poisonous gas and concluded with a poignant representation of a seed failing to blossom in contaminated soil, highlighting the generational impacts of the 1984 tragedy. Similarly, his choreography on Black July portrayed the experiences of three women, emphasizing how conflict disproportionately affects women and girls. These works underscore his belief in Bharatanatyam's capacity to tell diverse stories and serve as a powerful medium for social commentary. Through his school, Swara Kamalam, Iyengar also extends his philanthropic efforts to India. The institution funds the Srinivasa Smrithi dance scholarship, which supports underprivileged children who demonstrate exceptional talent in Bharatanatyam. This initiative is carried out in collaboration with the Nrutya Bhushana Dance Festival of Mysuru, India.
